POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME(PCOS)

It is common syndrome among woman who live in childbearing age. It is considered as a syndrome rather than disease. It effects directly to the women’s menstrual cycle.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a syndrome of ovarian dysfunction along with the cardinal features of hyper androgenism and polycystic ovary morphology.

It increases androgen and LH in the body and drop down FSH. FSH stimulate growth of follicles but in this condition lack of FSH decreases the growth of follicles. Lack of proper growth, numbers of follicles become cysts. LH level increase than FSH level and there is no LH surge So Without LH ovulation doesn’t occur.

What are the causes?

There is not exact cause for it. Some books said that it may be gene problem or life style factors or both.

Sign and symptoms

  • Menstrual irregularities, Oligomenorrhoea or/and amenorrhea
  • Hirsutism (excess facial or body hair)
  • Weight gain (Central Obesity)
  • Multiple small cysts in the ovaries
  • Male or female pattern balding
  • Acanthosis nigricans
  • Acne
  • Subfertility
  • Recurrent miscarriage

Effects of PCOS?

  • Endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer
  • Insulin resistance/Type II diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Strokes
  • Weight gain
  • Miscarriage
  • Sleep apnea
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Your doctor considers about following factors,

  1. Whether you were suffering from oligomenorrhea and/or anovulation.
  2. Clinical and/or biochemical signs of hyperandrogenism, and
  3. Positive polycystic ovaries through Trans Vaginal ultrasound scan.

If you have two out of above three your doctor suggest you have PCOS. If you have this signs and symptoms you must get treated. Because it may lead to infertility. With medication you can try this things,

You should avoid,

  • White Sugar
  • Tea
  • White rice
  • Potatoes
  • Bakery items (Buns, muffins, cakes, etc.)
  • Milk and dairy products
  • Soya products
  • Salt
  • Artificial and instant foods and drinks
  • chicken (broiler)
  • sedentary lifestyle

Try these also,

  • Use
    • Green leafy vegetables
    • fresh fruits
    • ghee
    • olive
    • nuts (almonds, peanuts, walnuts)
    • seeds (sunflower, sesames)
    • beans
    • spinach
    • avocado
    • orange
    • broccoli
    • green tea
    • sufficient amount of water
  • try some exercises , yoga and meditation
